Tuesday afternoon, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (17-13, 5-4 SAC) suffered a tough 11-3 loss against Southwestern Oklahoma State University (15-15, 8-10 GAC).
With the loss, the Drovers fall to 15-29 against the NCAA Division II foes. Furthermore, USAO is 6-7 against SWOSU since March 22, 2016.
After a scoreless first inning, SWOSU was able to capture the first lead of the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 7-0 with a trio of runs in the top of the third, followed by two more in the fifth.
The Drovers scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on Will Hoch's solo-homer.
However, SWOSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 9-1.
The Drovers managed to bring across two runs in the seventh, but the Bulldogs answered with two more runs of their own in the top of the ninth, prior to holding USAO scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.
Cameron Johnson got the start on the mound and was dealt the loss. Johnson went 3.0 innings, surrendering two earned runs on three hits and he struck out three batters.
Brian Ereu relieved Johnson for the next 2.0 innings, prior to Hagen Earls pitching in the sixth inning. Claudio Rodriguez delivered a pair of scoreless innings and struck out three batters. JD Prather allowed one run and struck out one batter in the ninth inning.
As a team, the Drovers compiled eight hits on offense and committed four errors on defense, while the Bulldogs produced 10 hits and only committed two fielding errors.
Nick Fleckenstein and Gavin Machado led the Drovers at the plate with a pair of two-hit performances. Gunnar Hansen finished 1-5 with a pair of runs batted in, and Will Hoch finished 1-4 with his second homer of the season. Ben Lawson and Luke Lewis each singled in the contest.
