The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its 2022-23 postseason awards on Thursday as redshirt sophomore guard Eylan Goodwyn and junior forward Seth Hurd from the MACU men's basketball team earned Honorable Mention accolades.
In his second season with the Evangels, Goodwyn was one of the most improved players in the SAC going from his freshman to sophomore seasons. After seeing action in just seven games in his first year at MACU, the 6-4 guard was MACU's leading scorer in 2022-23, scoring 353 points (13.1 ppg) on a strong 48.0 percent shooting clip, including going 28-for-79 (35.4 percent) from three and converted 79-of-104 (76.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Gladewater, Texas product was one of three MACU players to finish with 100 or more rebounds, tallying the third-most with 103 (3.8 rpg).
Goodwyn's best game with the Evangels came in a thrilling 80-79 victory against Texas Wesleyan inside the Gaulke Activity Center as he poured in a career-high 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and 5-for-7 from the line.
When the game was on the line, Goodwyn came up clutch for MACU on multiple occasions, including knocking down the go-ahead jumper with 16 seconds left in a 72-69 win at Bethel on Dec. 16 and converted the go-ahead layup with 2.2 seconds left in an 82-79 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 28.
In his first season at MACU, Hurd was the anchor for the Evangels in the low-post, scoring 288 points (11.1 ppg) on the eighth-highest field goal percentage in the SAC (54.1) while finishing second on the team in rebounds (124, 4.8 rpg) and blocked shots (17) as well as third on the squad in assists (47).
Hurd's best game of the season came in a thrilling overtime contest at John Brown on Feb. 16. Hurd led the Evangels with 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds and five assists, but MACU came up just a little short in the 101-96 road defeat.
Hurd notched three double-doubles on the season, including a 24-point, 11-board performance in an 82-72 win over Central Christian on Jan. 21 and a 21-point, 11-rebound outing in a 70-68 overtime victory at UNT Dallas on Feb. 9.
Mid-America Christian wrapped up the regular season with an 11-17 overall record and an 8-14 mark in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
