University of Oklahoma head wrestling coach Lou Rosselli announced the addition of transfers Stephen Buchanan and Gage Hockett from the University of Wyoming on Friday.
The pair arrive in Norman after successful careers at Wyoming, where they helped elevate the Cowboys to three of its most successful seasons. Buchanan was a two-time All-American at 197 pounds for the Cowboys, and Hockett compiled an 8-2 record last year as a freshman.
"They are both great additions to our team," Rosselli said. "Stephen is a proven winner and will help us continue to build our program. Gage is disciplined and truly loves the sport. He is a great addition and has a contagious work ethic."
Last season, Buchanan logged a 28-3 record with eight falls to earn the No. 1 seed at the Big 12 Championships at 197 pounds. The Loyal, Wisconsin, product claimed the 197-pound title in Tulsa to punch his third consecutive ticket to NCAAs. At the NCAA Championships, Buchanan earned the No. 2 seed and cruised through the bracket before dropping the national semifinal before responding to finish third in the country and become Wyoming's fourth two-time All-American. As a sophomore in 2020-21, Buchanan rattled off a 17-6 record en route to his first All-America honor after finishing eighth at NCAAs. As a freshman, he amassed a 26-13 record, including three wins over ranked opponents, on his way to his first NCAA appearance.
Hockett, originally from Cushing, Okla., saw limited time as a freshman at Wyoming, accumulating a 1-4 record. Then, in his redshirt freshman season in 2021-22, the 174-pounder compiled an 8-2 record, won the UNK Open and finished as the runner-up at the Mine's Rookie Open. A two-time OSSAA state champion for Cushing, Hockett tallied 145 victories in his prep career.
The Sooners (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) return to the mat on Jan. 7 when they take on Rosselli's alma mater, Edinboro, on the road. Oklahoma will compete at the Bobby Kaufman Open in Edinboro, Pa., the following day.
