University of Oklahoma head wrestling coach Lou Rosselli filled the vacancy on his coaching staff Monday, announcing the addition of former two-time OU national champion Teyon Ware as an assistant coach.
Ware joins Rosselli's staff after seven seasons at Wyoming, where he helped guide 33 Cowboys to NCAA berths and a 52-31 record in duals. As a Sooner wrestler from 2003-06, Ware won the 141-pound national title in 2003 and 2005 and earned All-America honors in all four seasons.
"We're incredibly excited to bring Teyon back to Norman," Rosselli said. "He is an outstanding addition to our program. He understands wrestling and is a great recruiter. I look forward to working with him."
The Edmond, Okla., native returns to his home state and brings over a decade of coaching experience to Rosselli's staff. He is a proven developer of multiple weight classes.
In addition to leading 33 Wyoming grapplers to NCAA berths, he helped four wrestlers win Big 12 championships. Under Ware's guidance, Stephen Buchanan and Bryce Meredith earned All-America honors in 2022 and 2018, respectively.
Prior to his tenure at Wyoming, Ware spent three years at Binghamton, helping send eight Bearcats to the NCAA Championships. Before his time at Binghamton, he was a club coach for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, Prodigy Wrestling Club and Oklahoma Underdog Wrestling Club.Ware went 132-0 and won four state championships at Edmond North High School, winning the national Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in 2002. He then accumulated a 112-15 record at OU under former head coach Jack Spates.
A member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Ware excelled on the international stage following his collegiate career at Oklahoma. He won a bronze medal at the 2011 Pan-American Games and wrestled for the United States at the 2011 World Championships.
Rosselli also announced Monday that Nick Heflin has been promoted to associate head coach. Heflin is entering his seventh year with the Sooners. Sam Hazewinkel remains the volunteer assistant coach.
Ware will officially join the Oklahoma staff on Oct. 14. The Sooners open their season Oct. 29 at the Crimson and Cream dual inside the historic McCasland Field House. The event will start at 11 a.m. CT.
